The Karwendel Nature Park is Austria's largest nature park and Tyrol's oldest protected area, and is considered one of the most beautiful hiking areas in the Alps. Our guided hike takes you through these impressive landscapes in five days and offers stunning scenery of rugged cliffs, clear mountain lakes, and lush alpine Meadows.

Our multi-day hike starts in the climatic health resort of Mittenwald and takes us deeper and deeper into the Karwendel valleys to Lake Achensee, the largest lake in Tyrol. During the crossing, we hike 56 km in five days with over 3500 meters of elevation gain in a unique and varied landscape, with a little surprise waiting for us at the end. A highlight during our guided mountain hike is the alpine village of Eng, with its 600-year-old maple trees, which attract many visitors, especially in autumn. The head of the valley with its rustic alpine huts, green alpine meadows, and rugged peaks is one of the most beautiful places in the Alps and invites you to take a long break with traditional cheese and sausage specialties.

During our tour, we will stay in shared rooms or dormitories in rustic mountain huts, where we will experience the warm hospitality of the Alps and can relax and enjoy the mountain world after an eventful day.

Note: The tour is designed for arrival and departure by public transport. From the end point of our hike at Lake Achensee, it is also possible to return home by public transport. If you are not traveling back to Mittenwald, please indicate this in your booking.

Day 1: Nestled between the Wetterstein Mountains, Kranzberg, and Karwendel, we start our hike in the climatic health resort of Mittenwald. Below the striking Viererspitze peak, our trail winds through the forest to the Mittenwalder Hütte, which is already visible from the valley. We climb uphill on good paths and enjoy beautiful views of Mittenwald and the Karwendel mountains upon arrival. In the evening, we enjoy the sunset, the view of the Zugspitze and the Wetterstein mountains from the large sun terrace.

Day 2: Early in the morning, we first descend a little and hike along the beautiful Leitersteig trail through the forest towards Scharnitz. A small suspension bridge is the highlight of today's hike. In Scharnitz, we can take a short break before a shuttle takes us through the Karwendeltal valley to the Karwendelhaus. In the over 100-year-old restaurant, we can end the evening and prepare for the next day.

Day 3: After yesterday's challenging stage, we can start today at a leisurely pace. We descend through the lower Filztal valley to the Kleiner Ahornboden. On the way, we pass the Herrmann von Barth monument, which was erected in homage to his love for the Karwendel region and his pioneering work. From the plateau of the Kleiner Ahornboden, we climb through the Sauuiswald forest to the Ladiz Alpe and soon reach our destination in the heart of the Karwendel – the Falkenhütte at the foot of the imposing Lalidererwände.

Day 4: Today's stage offers us fantastic and impressive scenic contrasts. In the morning, we start our hike below the Laliderer walls to the Hohljoch. From the Hohljoch, we hike along the Adlerweg trail towards Engalmen and the Großer Ahornboden. The head of the valley with its rustic alpine huts, green alpine meadows, and rugged peaks is one of the most beautiful places in the Alps, especially when the maple trees change color in autumn. After a long break with regional cheese and sausage specialties, we start the second stage of the day refreshed – the ascent via the Binsalm to the Lamsenjochhütte. On the large sun terrace, we can look back on a beautiful day.

Day 5: Unfortunately, today is already our last hike of the Karwendel crossing. From the Lamsenjochhütte, we can once again enjoy the view over the imposing Karwendel mountains before tackling the long descent over the eastern Lamsenjoch. The landscape changes with every kilometer we cover. Before reaching the Gramaialm, we turn off to see a waterfall before civilization catches up with us again. We hike along a forest path to Pertisau, where we come across the turquoise-colored Achensee lake and end our hike after a short boat trip.
